πŸŽ† Birthday in the Metaverse πŸŽ†

How birthdays used to work: you invite people, organize and pay for the venue and food, they bring gifts, everyone has a blast.

Now everyone's scattered across the globe, and forget about a party or gifts.

Solution: send people boxes of food and drinks, gather everyone in a 2-3D space with spatial audio (even Minecraft), and set up quests, D&D, competitions, and other fun activities.

Everyone has fun, enjoys themselves, and you get your gifts.

Type: company providing a service

Implementation: start with a host, then scripted for Minecraft / Roblox / ... (suggest others) + food procurement and delivery (via local systems)

Cost: number of people * type of food boxes + fixed fee for the host / script and admin overseeing the event

πŸ”₯ – brilliant idea πŸ’© – won't work

Questions:

  • If you've already seen / tried this, comment below
  • If you have experience scripting game servers, also comment or DM me (I want to host my next birthday like this)

Few daily tasks at work, and now socialization is also a work ritual.

I would gladly organize an offline computer club for 1-2 days with friends to just sit and play something over LAN like in the good old days. But online events, in my opinion, are so-so, because everyone is often half-paying attention, doing their own things in parallel. Probably for some Zoomers this topic is more workable, but they are also ADHD, so you need to come up with something to constantly hold their attention too.

A million percent offline is better and I'd prefer it too, the problem is that it's difficult/impossible to organize.

Regarding ADHD: that's why I'm not thinking about "a call with 10+ people, where some will talk, and the rest will quickly stop giving a f*ck" – but specifically a game, and in teams, something ridiculous that will make them press WASD.

But by the way, here's an idea: if it's possible to gather a group of people in one city, then you could rent a room at a computer club for them, order food and other things there, and at least some of them could meet in person.

We had a corporate event where the idea was to "send everyone some booze and have an online tasting with a quiz about what we were drinking." Half the team appreciated it, while the other half still has the alcohol sitting around. It's a cool idea, of course, but not everyone drinks.

It probably would have been more lively with pizza, but not everywhere delivers, and there are often issues with quality or delivery. So, if it's a corporate event, it should be in person.
